Cataract

Opacification of the normal lens is called cataract. It generally happens with age, but the etiology can be varied. It can occur due to trauma, use of medications, exposure to radiation, hereditary etc. It causes a decrease in your vision leading to a reduced functionality. The treatment includes surgical extraction of the cataract. Historically, the surgery started as intra capsular cataract extraction. It evolved to Extra capsular cataract extraction followed by Small incision cataract surgery, which has been followed by Phacoemulsification. It takes minutes to restore your reduced vision. The surgery involves removal of cataract followed by placement of an intra ocular lens. The cost of the surgery is determined by the type of incision and the type of the intra ocular lens which is implanted.
